A BRIEF HISTORY OF BMX
Someplace in California, a group of kids had a great
idea. They converted their 20" Schwinn bikes into the first primitive "trick
bikes". The BMX was born, but it wasn't yet officially called BMX.
This started happening all over the place too, not just California. Bruce
Brown's ON ANY SUNDAY Motocross film had a clip of these bmx pioneers. Everyone
who saw that film were converting schwinn's. Soon the sport was everywhere.
Everyone had to have a BMX.
Nothing and nobody could stop the BMX inzasion. The new sport was named Bicycle
Motocross, which quickly lead to the acronym, BMX. In just one summer every kid
was now on a bike.
Bicycle companies didn't have a blind eye to all the kids, and they started
making bikes just for jumps, BMXes. Not all the companies called it this though.
More and more companies started sprouting up and some that only created BMXes.
Soon these kids were getting air off dirt jumps and pulling supermans. Just like
their motoheros. The companies started making "dirt" bikes and "freestyle" bikes
and "street" bikes too. This is where we are left, with pros like Dave Mirra and
Ryan Nyquist. Stick with the sport because it is just blossoming.
You could be the next BMX hero of our generation.
